Collage

Thought of the day:

Living in a city like Beijing opens your eyes. The city with its more then 20 million people consists of a fragmented collage of views, atmospheres and feelings.
Living in the Central Business Districts makes you feel small in a way, but makes you feel giant in another way. You can identify yourself with one of these thin towers that define the skyline of the city. Spending time in these towers makes you part of the system. The system that generates activity, activity not in the way you would expect.

The groundlevel is not the place where you want to be, its the place where you have to pass trough. The giant horizontal plane is the place where all the towers are plugged in. That plane is the battefield, the warzone between cars and pedestrian. Everybody gets impatient and wants to get out of this hellhole. There is no straight way, you jump into every 2 cm to make sure you can maintain your speed. From the moment you close the door of your appartment behind you, you try to hold your breath. The elevator becomes the space-in-between and is the transition. The doors open and you hear the imaginary gunshots that remind you there is no time to think or waste, there is only one way and its the way in front of you. Crossing thousands of people in a single minute, staring, spitting and coughing remind you how good the office is. When is that white tower appearing from the fog?

Different scales, from the glooming pinnacles to the human-scaled hutongs. Beijing is a city of contrasts.
